Early Childhood Center’s 2019 Family Fun Literacy Night

Families at the Early Childhood Center were invited to the EC’s 2019 Family Fun Literacy Night themed around the book, “The Very Cranky Bear” by Nick Bland. Families got to meet all of the EC faculty, listen to EC teachers read aloud “The Very Cranky Bear,” and participate in literacy activities like rhyming games, word and letter finds, word segmenting to begin to understand the concept of syllables, retelling of a story by crafting a headband, and more.

Check out this fun clip from the start of EC Speech Pathologist Jeni Baron’s read aloud:

The EC’s annual Family Fun Literacy Night is an invaluable learning opportunity for families and showcases the power of reading inside and outside of the classroom. Take a look at some of the photos from the “beary” (had to say it!) successful celebration of literacy …

“The Very Cranky Bear” by Nick Bland provided the theme for the EC’s 2019 Family Fun Literacy Night.

EC Teacher Jeni Baron was one of the readers of “The Very Cranky Bear.” She is an incredible storyteller!

So many Batavia High School students volunteered at the EC’s Family Fun Literacy Night. They were great!

BHS students were great sports, too. They made literacy headbands with the little ones and gave a green light on a snapshot of their work. 🙂

EC Teacher Allison Bielski working with students on a rhyming bears game—find the bears that match with a rhyme. Like all of the evening’s literacy games, it matched the theme, “The Very Cranky Bear.”

In the “media bin,” students had to find words that start with the letter “B” and put them in their basket.

High five at Karen Nellis’ table! Mrs. Nellis was named “Educator of the Year” in the Preschool Teacher Category at last year’s Kane County ROE Educator of the Year Awards. Mrs. Nellis has been a dedicated teacher in early childhood for over 37 years and has been teaching in the BPS101 Early Childhood program for 20 years!

The three bears? All ears? No! It’s (from left) EC Teacher Susan Jones, Intervention Transition Coordinator Marilyn Horbus, and Speech Pathologist Leeann Rodriguez.

How cute is this EC mom and her Pippi Longstocking?
