Eagle Scout Project Brings LEGO Table to AGS

When AGS LRC Director Tamra Ashby reached out to Batavia High School sophomore Austin Mefford to ask if he would be interested in building a LEGO table for AGS students, he came back with a “Yes!”

Mrs. Ashby had heard that this former AGS student was looking for an Eagle Scout project, and thought this might be right up his alley.

To complete the six-week project, Austin enlisted the help of Jon Green, husband of first-grade AGS Teacher Kristin Green, as well as fellow Scouts. And, as part of the Eagle Project criteria, Austin had to supervise the construction of the table from start to finish … and find workers to supervise.

“Mr. Green helped me with ideas on how to make the table sturdy and provided lots of tools to help build it,” said Austin.

BHS students and Scouts from Troop 43, Adam Stiner and Cole Hemmes, worked many hours on the project under Austin’s watchful eye.

According to Austin, the most challenging aspect of this project was “getting everything to code and approved by the Boy Scouts of America.”
The most rewarding part?
“Hearing how all of the kids love and enjoy the table, and that it’s used every day,” he said.

“This is a one-of-a-kind custom table built specifically for our LRC,” said Mrs. Ashby. “Austin met several times with me to develop the table design. The table was engineered to address factors such as stability, size, storage, and mobility. The icing on the cake is that a former AGS student has made such an impact not only the students at AGS today, but for our students for years to come. That’s quite a legacy!”
