AGS Teacher Presented with Quilt of Valor
AGS Fifth-Grade Teacher Nichole Woodruff got a big surprise today.
During the AGS Veterans Day Ceremony, she was presented with a “Quilt of Valor” for her service in the Illinois Army National Guard. The special quilt was presented to her by retired AGS Fourth-Grade Teacher Glenda Peck.
Mrs. Peck and her quilting group, Land of Lincoln Quilts of Valor, based in St. Charles, Ill., create quilts year-round for the Quilts of Valor Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is “to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.”
Since the Quilts of Valor Foundation was started in 2003 by a mom whose son was deployed to Iraq, more than 200,000 Quilts of Valor have been made by individual quilters and quilting groups for active members of the military and veterans.
“Those of us who piece and sew together these gifts, hope that the love and care that we have in our hearts for all who have served is reflected in every stitch, every scrap of fabric, and every carefully crafted pattern,” said Mrs. Peck during the AGS Veterans Day Ceremony. “Today, we recognize the dedication and service of all of our veterans here.”
Led by AGS Principal Dr. Tim McDermott, the AGS Veterans Day Ceremony was attended by veterans, students, staff, and families. The special event included an opening flag ceremony by AGS Boy Scouts, a performance by the AGS choir, and a reading from Margot Theis Raven’s children’s book, “America’s White Table,” by AGS LRC Director Tamra Ashby.
