LRC History
Pictured here, Dorothy J. (“Dottie”) Lowe, a former AGS principal and the learning resource center namesake, shares a story about a cat at a March 2, 1999 “Dr. Seuss reading celebration.” She chose the story because her cat’s name was “Chessie,” and in the story, reference was made to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. Mrs. Lowe connected the story to her growing-up years in Jackson, Ohio where she watched trains roll through town with the symbol of “Chessie” the cat on the boxcars.
Mrs. Lowe seldom discussed her life experiences with others. Her own family was unaware until her funeral that the AGS learning resource center was named in her honor in 1987. Mrs. Lowe was a modest and gracious person whose concern was always for children and their rights to a quality life and a quality education.
Her life’s joy was listening to her school children and fellow educators and helping all of them to be effective lifelong learners. Even in retirement, she continued being an educator and a tireless advocate for children. On her final day of life, March 25, 1999, Mrs. Lowe was planning to be with several of her grandchildren; she was then going to counsel someone because she was a volunteer who helped children involved in cases at the Kane County Court House.
The books and computers in the AGS LRC pay tribute to Mrs. Dottie Lowe’s love of children and learning.
