School Improvement Plan

Every two years, our school develops a school improvement plan based on achievement data we collect and analyze.  Our goal is to improve writing scores for all students, kindergarten through fifth grade. Classroom instruction is focused on improving students’ skill in focus, support, and organization. Good writers focus their writing on one topic and keep that focus throughout the piece. They support their ideas by providing details and rationale, which can come from their own experiences or information they have read. They organize their writing into logical sequences and structures that groups related information.

Our writing program, Being a Writer, is an essential tool in the achievement of our school improvement goal. Students learn to write in three genres: narrative, informational, and argumentative.  The recent change of our Illinois State Standards to the Common Core Standards places a greater emphasis on informational and argumentative writing for students to be college and career ready. Therefore, our school improvement plan places more emphasis on this type of writing as well.
